A Handsome Quart Taper-Sided Mug by Jacob Whitmore

A handsome 18th century quart taper-sided mug by Jacob Whitmore, 1757-1790. Jacob Whitmore shared a shop with Thomas Danforth II in Middletown until Danforth’s death in 1782 and continued to use the shop along with Danforth’s sons.

Whitmore is known to have produced both pint and quart taper-sided mugs with a number of different handle designs, as well as plates, dished and basins. Thus far no porringers marked by him have been found in spite of the fact that the Danforth’s made several different styles in Middletown.

This quart mug is in very good to fine condition. The lathe turning marks are clearly seen both on the inside and outside bottom. Scrap finishing marks show on the thumb rest of the handle as well as above the ball terminal. The handle on this mug is the larger, more robust, variety used by both the Danforth’s and Whitmore.

The mug measures 5 15/16” tall to the lip. The touch is fine “as struck” meaning it wasn’t a complete impression which is typical of Whitmore touches. Apparently, Whitmore used a batch of solder that was reluctant to flow smoothly. Note the run of solder by the ball terminal and the beads of solder around the inside bottom.
