An Export Pewter Three Footed Pear Form Teapot by Samuel Ellis - SOLD

An Export Pewter Three Footed Pear Form Teapot by Samuel Ellis

A Three footed Pear Form Export Pewter Teapot by Samuel Ellis who worked in London from 1721-1765. This form is often referred to by collectors as a “Queen Anne Teapot”. She died in 1714 prior to the origination of this form which actually originated under the reign of King George II 1727-1760. The Queen Anne designation seems much more appropriate to be assigned to this form.

Samuel Ellis was a Master Pewterer and was a major exporter to the American Colonies. Ellis made plates dishes and basins, mugs of various forms, a variety of tulip and taper sided tankards, teapots of various designs with and without feet. There are also spire flagons that appear with his touch usually struck under the “TC” hallmarks.

There is a document in the Boston Public Library of a transaction between Robert & Thomas Porteous and Boston Merchants for a sizeable order of pewter items. In the letter accompanying the order Samuel Ellis is mentioned as having “retired to the country” and how he was “famous” and that the merchants had most likely had heard of him.

This teapot measures approximately 6” tall to the top of the finial. It is in very good plus condition with a near perfect impression of the S. Ellis in rectangle touchmark. The handle is original with some restorations to the upper curl and lower section.
