A Mid 18th Century Pewter Pear Shaped Export Teapot by John Townsend

This English Export Pewter pear form teapot is a product of the shop of John Townsend London 1748-1801, John Townsend had a major export business to the Colonies, Pennsylvania in particular.

Records for Daniel Wister, a Philadelphia merchant, show several orders from the Townsend Shop in 1763. One order consisted of over 12,000 pieces of pewter packed in 24 Casks each with an assortment of pewter items, plates, dishes, basins, mugs ,tankards, porringers, teapots, spoons, and other items.

This teapot is of a design that the firm made during this time frame. The Townsend firm and partnerships changed designs to keep up with the latest trends in fashion.

This pot is in very good plus condition. The touchmark is fine. The handle and finial button are restorations. The handle is a faithful copy of a specific design used by Townsend on teapots of this size and pattern. Townsend’s handles vary depending of the style and period of teapot. The teapot measures 5 ½” to the top of the finial.
