A Jacob Whitmore Pewter Plate - SOLD

Jacob Whitmore worked in the same shop as Thomas Danforth II in Middletown, Connecticut. Whitmore was in business form 1757-1790. Whitmore had joint ownership of a goodly number of molds with Thomas Danforth II.

This plate was cast in a mold used by many of the Danforths as well as Whitmore. It is struck twice with Whitmore’s crowned rose touchmark.

The plate measures 7 7/8” in diameter. It shows soft wear indicating that it was used but not abused. The marks are near fine as struck, indicating that this is as good as the marks were at the time the pewterer struck them. Examples of touches pieces by most early pewterers have partially struck marks. It is difficult to get a perfect impression striking a die with a hammer.
