An Export Pewter Tablespoon by Townsend & Compton

An Export Pewter Tablespoon by Townsend & Compton

This cast decorated tablespoon is by Townsend in partnership with his son-in-law Thomas Compton. This partnership was in business from 1784-1802. The spoon measures 9” long and is in very fine condition. Note the clear scrape finish marks on the back of the bowl.

The cast decoration mimics "bright cut" engraving that was popular at the end of the 18th century into the beginning of the 19th.

An order from John Townsend to Daniel Wister in Philadelphia 1763 had a total of 9 dozen spoons of various descriptions. Spoon survival is not great, especially in this condition.

Price: $135
