A Very Fine Pear Form Export Pewter Teapot by Townsend & Compton - SOLD
An Outstanding example of a transitional pear form export pewter teapot by Townsend & Compton of London. This example has a double stepped lid, a design that became the style in the late 18th century. This style change was adopted by a number of American pewterers including Thomas Boardman and Samuel Danforth.
Townsend and Compton worked in London from 1784-1802. They had a major export market to America particularly Pennsylvania.
It was also during this period where pewterers began to use hollow cast pewter handles rather than the traditional wood handles as seen on this fine example. The handle is original.
This teapot measures 6 1/2" tall to the top of the finial. The wood finial button is a replacement. The exterior is in very fine condition. The interior has a few sporadic pits.
