A Flat Rim Export Pewter Plate by Robert Bush & Co
This Export Pewter Flat Rim plate is from the shop of Robert Bush & Company of Bristol England. Bush and other Bristol makers had a sound market in New England. There market in Pennsylvania was overshadowed by the London pewterers particularly the Townsend Group.
This 8 1/4" flat rim plate is made of a higher quality metal than generally seen in Bristol Plates. It is interesting to note that the Bristol makers used a lesser quality metal in their flatware yet their hollowware was generally of a very high-quality metal. The starting date for the firm is unknown however operations ceased in 1793.
This plate is well made and the workmanship is excellent. The touches are well struck. Note that the first "O" of the LONDON mark is actually a "Q". This was done, I am sure, to prevent problems with the London Guild.
