A Pattern 1858 Smooth Side Civil War Canteen - SOLD

This canteen is likely a product of the New York Depot, having a wool cover cotton strap and chained cork. The Government issued many contracts during the war and well over a million canteens were produced.

This example retains it’s original cover with some stains, the original strap/sling, and the original cork stopper with chain. The sling has been resewn where the two ends come together.

After the war many thousands of canteens were altered to be issued to troops in the western theater as well as for troops during the Spanish American War.
