A Tulip From Export Pewter Tankard by Samuel Ellis - SOLD
This quart tulip form export pewter tankard is from the shop of Samuel Ellis of London, working circa 1721-1765 producing quality wares for export.
Ellis had a major export market to New England. He produced a wide range of forms, including mugs, tankards, flagons, plates, dishes, basins, pear form teapots in various sizes with and without feet.
His designs were exceptionally pleasing in form. The work produced in his shop was of the highest quality.
Robert and Thomas Porteous, export pewterers from London, mention in a letter to a group of Boston merchants that, 'Mr. Ellis, made famous with his business in the Colonies had retired to the country.' The letter referenced dates from 1765
