Much of the equipment used by colonial and early industrial period pewters has been lost to the scrap pile. Many molds made their way to the smelting pot during WWII, while lathes and turning chucks are lost of forgotten.
This tool came out of Rhode Island and is of 18th century manufacture, mid century to 1800. The pewter "wrap" around the burnishing/cutting end is actually poured in place into channels cut in the wood. The molten metal bonded to the wood and firmly grasped the metal blade at the end.
In fine condition measuring 19 1/2" in length.
