A Samuel Danforth Old English Handle Pewter Porringer - SOLD
amuel Danforth worked in Hartford, CT from 1795-1816 where he conducted his business as a gifted pewterer producing a wide variety of wares and training one of Connecticut's most famous pewterers, Thomas Danforth Boardman.
This porringer is utilizes a handle mold that originated in New York City and was originally used by Cornelius Bradford. The back of the bracket of this handle originally produced a raised cast "CB" on it. The next owner, likely William Bradford, peened out the "CB" and all subsequent castings from this mold have a raised "bump" where the "CB" used to be.
The next owner was Frederick Bassett, who moved to Hartford during the Revolution and apparently sold the mold to Samuel when Bassett returned to NYC, following the end of the War.
This porringer measures 4 15/16" in diameter. The touch is very well struck. The linen mark is very pronounced. The metal is in very good plus condition with some mild sporadic pitting. Priced accordingly.
An excellent example of a porringer made by a maker working in the late 18th to early 19th century.
