Gershom Jones Pewter Flower Handled Porringer - SOLD
This flower handle pewter porringer was made by Gershom Jones of Providence, RI working from 1774-1809 marked with his rampant lion touchmark that closely resembles the touch of his master, John Danforth.
Jones trained with John Danforth of Norwich, CT circa 1765-1772. He moved to Rhode Island and began pewtering there circa 1774. At some time either during or after the Revolution, Jones produced and eagle touchmark for marking flatware to replace his Lion in Gateway touch again copied from John Danforth's. He did not however, create a new die for marking porringers and continued to use this early die throughout his pewtering career.
This porringer has a 5 7/16" bowl and is in fine condition with a superb touchmark. The linen mark is sharp also showing a "sink-hole" type depression. This was caused when the molten metal cooled. This causes the metal to "suck" away from the bowl. This is most frequently seen on large porringers.
