An Old English Handle Porringer by Frederick Bassett
We are pleased to offer this fine example of a Frederick Bassett Old English Handled Porringer. Bassett worked in NYC 1761-1780 then in Hartford, Connecticut 1780-1785 and then back in NYC 1785-1799.
The bowl on this porringer is 4 ¼” in diameter. Note the lip of the bowl is incised with 2 lines. This technique was employed by numbers of Pewterers in New York City. The porringer is marked on the back of the “ear” in the 18th century manner.
Of interest there is a slight void in the casting of the “ear” this is undoubtedly due to the mold as well as the molten metal not being sufficiently hot enough to fill the mold cavity fully. Apparently, Mr. Bassett felt it was up to being marked and sold in the shop. A very fine example with a near perfect touchmark.
Price: $1450
