A Superb Early Thomas Danforth III / Joseph Danforth Pewter Plate - SOLD
This 7 15/16" shallow bouge pewter plate is by Thomas Danforth III. This was likely made in Middletown shortly after Thomas II death in 1782.
The die is the T I lion in "waisted" oval. This die was originally used by Thomas II and his brother John and later perhaps by Thomas III and his brother Joseph.
This plate could be an example of the latter partnership. This die had the "I" recut to a "D" and after that was used exclusively by Thomas Danforth III.
This plate was likely made somewhere between 1782 and 1788 when Joseph died.
The plate is in extremely fine condition with strong touchmarks. Enhancing these are beautifully engraved initials, taken from English Pattern Books, often referred to as "Boston Initials" due to their prevalent use in the area.
This plate was found years ago by a dealer in a home not far from Boston. It has resided since then in my father, Wendell Hilt's collection.
