A Fine Single Reed Rim Pewter Plate by George Lightner - SOLD
This 8 3/4" pewter plate is by George Lightner of Baltimore. Lightner was in business from 186-1815. The quality of his work is quite fine. His production seems to have been limited to plates dishes and basins.
This example is in very fine condition with fine "as struck" touchmarks. Large touchmarks like these were most difficult to get full impressions of. The two touches here if combined would produce a nearly complete touch.
This eagle touch, we believe is his earlier touch.
Note the spiral chatter marks radiating outward from the center of the plate. Collectors find this interesting and attractive. We think the pewterers though their lathe needed the bearings tightened up again.
An excellent example of this Southern maker's work.
