A Mint Pewter Plate by George Lightner - SOLD

A Mint Pewter Plate by George Lightner

George Lightner produced quality pewter flatware in Baltimore, Maryland from 1806 until 1815 and is considered a "Southern" pewterer.

This plate is remarkable in that there are no "scuff marks" on the back of the plate, which are almost always present. The simple act of sliding a plate across a table or counter always leaves this "scuffing". Note too that there are no knife marks. Every lathe turning mark is clear.

The touchmarks are mint "as struck". This means that there was never any more showing and no wear is present.

The plate is of a wonderful quality metal and of substantial construction. This man's molds apparently made relatively substantial castings and resulted in a strong finish product
