A Very Rare American Pewter Plate by Joseph Belcher - SOLD
This rare 8" plate is either the product of Joseph Belcher, Sr. Newport, Rhode Island 1769-1776 or Jr. Newport 1776-1784, New London, Connecticut 1784-87, Struck three times on the back of the plate a tradition carried on by a pewterer working later, William Billings.
This 8" plate has surface etching on the face. There are numerous knife marks. The back of the plate is near fine condition with three well struck examples of the Belcher Bird Touchmark.
I personally believe this is by the Sr. Belcher due to the marking technique. Either way this is quite a rare plate to find. In fact this is the first example we have ever had.
