This 1848 Dated Model 1842 Musket was made at Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. These muskets were used in the Mexican War along with flint muskets and flint muskets converted to percussion.
This musket has a 42" barrel. The proof marking and lockplate markings are strong. The stock retains the Federal Inspector's cartouche.
There is some wear at the wrist of the stock (see photo), other than this the stock is excellent with sharp edges around the lock and opposite the lock. Overall an near fine example of a musket. These were issued to many troop early in the Civil War prior to the massive deliveries of rifle muskets manufactured by Springfield and numerous private contractors.
This musket is as manufactured with a smoothbore. Many of these were later rifled and had long range rear sites installed. They .69 caliber.
