A Very Fine Antique American Pewter Flagon by Hiram Yale & Co. of Wallingford, Connecticut - SOLD
Hiram Yale and his brother Charles were in partnership from about 1824-1835. They produced a variety of goods both in cast and apparently spun metal. This handsome flagon incorporates both aspects.
Flagons by this firm vary in design of finials, and bases, as well as height. This particular example measures 13 ½” to the top of the finial.
The “acorn” or “thistle” body rests on a strongly designed foot. The sweeping handle and spout help balance the design. The quality of the metal is superb as is the workmanship. The flagon is in very fine condition with a mint touchmark on the bottom.
Of interest is the fact that the finial was “cast in place” on the top of the lid and a “linen mark” is clearly present on the inside of the lid.
A very fine example of a early 19th century Connecticut flagon.
