Export Pewter Sauce Boat by Henry Joseph of London. His working years are 1736-1792 a span of 56 years. Joseph’s products were many however his primary products were hollowware. He made teapots, cream pots, flagons, tankards, flatware as well as sauce boats.
He produced a wide variety of pear form teapots with early low dome lid varieties followed by examples with “bell” shaped lids. These are sometimes found on feet.
This sauce boat is one of the several varieties that he produced. Some people have suggested that this form resembles an inverted Roman Legionary Helmet place on a circular foot.
This Sauce Boat is clearly marked with Joseph’s HI shield touch on the underside of the foot. The metal is in near fine condition showing some “soft wear”. The sauce boat measures 7 1/8” lengthwise and 3 ¾” to the top of the handle.
