An Export Pewter Tablespoon by Samuel Ellis - SOLD
One of the more notable Export Pewterers of the Pre-Revolutionary period is Samuel Ellis. He worked in London from 1721-1765 when it is stated that he retired to the country. Ellis was a Master Pewterer and he had a substantial selection of product that he sold. He is well known for his pear-shaped teapots which are found with and without “feet”. He produced large quantities of flatware including plates, soup plates, dishes, deep dishes as well as basins. He also made mugs and tankards of various designs. The quality of his metal was first rate.
This tablespoon is 7 ¾” long in very good condition. This piece saw a considerable amount of use as the front end of the bowl has been worn down. It should be noted that pewterers sent sizeable orders of spoons to New England and the Colonies. Not many survive due to several reasons, wear, disposability and the fact that subsequent generations apparently felt that saving grandpa’s spoon wasn’t a high priority.
