An Export Pewter Tablespoon by Thomas & Townsend Compton - SOLD
This export pewter tablespoon was made by Thomas & Townsend Compton who were members of the Townsend dynasty of pewterers. John Townsend the patriarch began working in 1748 and continued until his death in 1801. These two men were his son-in-law and grandson. They were in business from 1802-1814.
Although all to the Townsend dynasty exported large numbers of spoons, the survival rate is very small. This spoon is in fine condition with a mint strike of their small touch. There is some light wear on the left side of the bowl indicating a right-handed person used it. The cast shell on the back of the bowl is outstanding. Scrape finish marks are pronounced. The spoon measures 8 11/16" long.
