Philip Mathews worked in London from 1729 until his death in 1753. His widow carried on the business until her death in 1764.
Mathews served his apprenticeship with Robert Iles of London. Both men were exporters to America.
Mathews produced both tankards and mugs. His workmanship and quality are outstanding.
This handsome taper sided tankard measures 7 3/16" tall to the top of the thumbpiece. Both the metal and mark are in very fine condition. From our personal collection (W&P)
