A John Townsend Early Form Tulip Pewter Export Mug
John Townsend ran what is certainly the most successful Pewter Dynasty from 1748 until his death in 1801. His successors carried on the traditions and product quality well past his passing.
This early form quart tulip pewter mug has a broader design body as compared to later produced mugs by the Townsend group. The later ones are more slender.
The handle is also of a early bold heavy design and feels substantial in one's hand. This design of handle was employed by the Danforths of Middletown on many of their early mugs.
The mug is in very good plus condition. The hallmarks are very good the main touch is worn but identifiable. A very early uncommon example of Townsend's work. (W&P)
