A Pear Shaped Teapot by Joseph Spackman - SOLD
This "low dome" pear shaped teapot is by Joseph Spackman, London 1749-1770's. Spackman had a substantial export market. His work found in America includes teapots, mugs, plates, dishes, and basins.
His first shop was on Fenchurch Street ( John Townsend's shop was also located here) and he later moved nearby to Cornhill Street.
The "low dome" variety of teapot is felt to be the earliest design lid on pear shaped teapots. This style of domed lid is also found on English cricket-ball or skittle-ball teapots. The lack of turned banding on the body is also indicative of early teapots.
In good condition with some pitting. The handle and wood finial button are replaced and are faithfully based on period examples.
5 1/2" tall to the top of the finial.
