British Pewter > Teapots, Coffeepots, Pitchers & Sugar Bowls
An Antique English Export Pewter Broth Bowl by John Fasson
This Broth Bowl is likely the work of John Fasson II of London. He followed his father's business and began working circa 1745-82.
Collectors refer to this form as Broth Bowls. The London Company of Pewterers 1772 Table on the Assay of Metal, lists breakfast bowls. There is also anecdotal evidence that they may have been used as waste bowls for tea service.
Most of them show few if any spoon marks which would certainly be the case if they were used as breakfast bowls. Secondly, there is at least one of these bowl that was found with historical association with a teapot. Both the teapot and the bowl are engraved with the same owner's initials. Note the similarity of the turned band on the bowl and the banding found on some of the 18th century pear-shaped teapots.
In very good plus condition. 3 1/2" tall 5 3/4" top diameter. Ex Charles V. Swain Collection.
Price: $550
