An Export Pewter"Broth Bowl" by George Grenfell
English Export “Broth Bowl” by George Grenfell, London 1757-1784. Grenfell had a fairly substantial business in Exports. He produced teapots with and without feet, various sizes of tankards. I don’t recall offhand encountering any flatware in New England.
His hollowware is all made of quality metal and is beautifully made. This bowl is 4 7/8” top diameter and 3 5/8” tall to the lip. It is clearly marked on the outside bottom. It is in fine condition on the exterior with only some light porosity on the interior of the bowl.
There are various descriptions of what these bowls were used for, one is “breakfast bowls” another that I am a supporter of is waste bowls for tea leaves. I have seen dozens of these bowls over the years and can recall none with spoon marks on the inside. They all have been free of any wear one would expect if spoons were being used in them.. The lack of spoon marks on the inside would be understandable if the bowl only held dregs of the spent tea leaves.
