A Scarce Footed Antique English Export Pewter Teapot by Robert & Thomas Porteus
In the Boston Public Library there is a receipt from Robert & Thomas Porteus to the firm of Blanchard & Hancock for a very substantial order of pewter wares. Among the items listed 60 pint teapots with feet. The entire order includes a total of 144 teapots. Due to the date of the order February 1765 it is safe to assume that all of these were pear-form teapots.
Robert and Thomas Porteus worked in London from 1762-1767. A number of years ago we had a teapot from the same set of molds by Richard Pitt.
The order includes other forms including plates, dishes, basons, milk pots, canns, tankards, spoons, etc.
This footed export pewter teapot is the first example of a footed teapot by this firm we have ever encountered. The metal is in very good condition. The button and handle are restored based on period designs.
The teapot measures 6 ½” tall to the top of the finial
